UAE telecom provider du has launched a digital transformation playbook for SMEs in collaboration with Huawei UAE.
This guide outlines ways SMEs can enhance cash flow, improve payment experiences, and strengthen operational resilience through digital tools.
The playbook, titled From Set Up to Set for Growth, is based on a digital transformation study involving face-to-face interviews with 648 UAE SMEs.
The study team conducted the research between January and March 2026 across all seven emirates and five major industry sectors.
The study found that while basic technology adoption is high, only 8% of surveyed SMEs have reached advanced digital maturity. It notes that 77% of businesses use point of sale systems, 81% use computers, and 63% use basic productivity tools.
SMEs continue to face significant barriers to deeper integration. Setup costs were cited by 47% of respondents as the primary hurdle.
Other common challenges include skills gaps at 45%, subscription costs at 37%, and technology integration difficulties at 31%.
Maximising existing tools
Rather than pushing for new software purchases, the playbook advises businesses on how to extract more value from their current tech stack.
The guidance focuses on centralising customer data, improving digital payment flows, protecting financial information, and using low-risk AI applications.
Currently, only 15% of surveyed SMEs use AI and analytics platforms. The guide recommends starting with simple time-saving tasks like summarising information and drafting communications before moving to more complex use cases.

Huawei is contributing ICT infrastructure and solutions, including 5G, cloud and IP networks, to support du’s SME digital offerings.
