Flutterwave is partnering with blockchain network Tempo to launch stablecoin-powered payments and infrastructure for settlements across Africa.
The collaboration will integrate Tempo as a blockchain settlement network within the Send App and Flutterwave for Business platforms.
This infrastructure aims to enable faster global money movement for both individuals and enterprises once the system goes live.
This initiative addresses the high costs and lengthy delays associated with traditional cross-border transactions in Africa.
According to the World Bank, remittance fees to sub-Saharan Africa average approximately 7%.
This figure exceeds the global average of 6% and sits well above the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal target of 3%.
Expanding the Flutterwave payment infrastructure
Traditional correspondent banking and foreign exchange chains often delay settlements for several business days, reducing liquidity for companies and families.
To mitigate these friction points, Flutterwave is embedding Tempo’s layer-1 blockchain network as a complementary rail within its multi-chain payments architecture, which already uses Polygon-based stablecoin settlements.
Once fully deployed, the integration will support wallet-to-wallet USDC and USDT transactions to provide predictable transaction costs and stable performance. The network operates alongside existing infrastructure to allow flexible settlement options based on specific corridor requirements.
The companies are updating two core applications to support these payment options. The Send App connects individuals in the US, UK, European Union, and Canada to recipients in Africa.
Meanwhile, Flutterwave for Business powers enterprise cross-border payments, supplier settlements, and US dollar flows.
Tempo features fast transaction finality and aligns with ISO 20022, which is the global standard for financial messaging that enables richer transaction data.
This alignment will allow corporate users to reconcile cross-border transactions directly within their existing finance and enterprise resource planning systems.
