Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD) has joined the Commercial Bank Money Token (CBMT) network. The bank says it is the first lender from outside Europe to take part.
It hopes to give business clients faster and clearer payments between Europe and the Gulf.
Die Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft, the German banking industry body, leads CBMT.
Its members include Commerzbank, DZ Bank, Helaba and UniCredit. BNP Paribas, ABN AMRO and DNB joined this year.
CBMT is built so banks can settle business payments with tokenised deposits.
Unlike stablecoins made outside the banking system, these tokens stay on the bank’s balance sheet. They follow the same rules as regular deposits.
CBD will first join the CBMT Sandbox, a test space that opened in Frankfurt in November 2025.
This year, banks in the sandbox made their first live token transfers with industrial firms.
There, CBD will work with other banks and the tech firms UDPN and GFT. Together, they will test cross-border payments, trade settlement, treasury work and working capital planning.
The bank said the tests follow the rules in each country. Nor do they commit CBD to a commercial launch.

“Corporate and institutional clients across the Gulf and Europe want cross-border payments that are near real-time, transparent, and anchored in the security of commercial bank money,”
said Barbara Riccardi, Co-Head of Wholesale Banking at CBD.

“CBMT was initiated by the German banking industry together with corporate clients to bring commercial bank money onto digital rails,
but the challenges it solves, including slow and costly cross-border corporate payments, are global,”
said Claus George of DZ BANK, speaking for the CBMT Working Group.
