The UAE has launched the ‘AI for Development’ initiative, a US$1 billion programme to support AI projects in African countries.
The initiative aims to enhance economic and social development by improving digital infrastructure, government services, and productivity.
Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, announced the initiative at the G20 summit, highlighting the UAE’s commitment to sustainable growth through international partnerships and innovative financing.
The initiative will be implemented by the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX), part of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, in cooperation with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency.
It seeks to help developing countries integrate AI into key sectors such as education, agriculture, and infrastructure, supporting solutions that accelerate growth and expand opportunities for sustainable development.
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and Chairman of the Exports Executive Committee of ADEX, said:

“By combining technology, financing and partnerships, we aim to support developing countries in overcoming developmental challenges and building long-term economic resilience.”
He added that integrating AI into education, agriculture, and infrastructure opens “new horizons for inclusive development” and empowers UAE enterprises to implement high-impact projects that strengthen cooperation with African countries.
Dr Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Foreign Aid Agency, said the initiative reflects the UAE’s ongoing commitment to global development and improving living standards, particularly in countries facing significant challenges.
He noted that many African nations require transformative projects in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, and that the UAE continues to position itself as a centre for AI innovation.
Since 1971, the UAE has provided over Dh152 billion in aid to African nations.
The AI for Development initiative builds on this legacy, supporting AI-driven projects that aim to advance sustainable growth and modernisation across the continent.
