Absa Group has selected Thunes as a strategic Multicurrency Clearing (MCC) partner. The move expands the Absa and Thunes cross-border payments partnership across African markets.
It builds on Absa Global Pay, a solution the two firms recently launched in South Africa.
Under the wider deal, Thunes will support Absa’s cross-border payments strategy across Africa and global markets.
Multicurrency clearing is a core part of that strategy, according to Absa, which aims to give clients faster and more transparent cross-border payments with more choice.
The collaboration links Absa’s banking footprint across Africa directly to Thunes’ Direct Global Network, which spans more than 140 countries, 90 currencies and 220 payment methods.
As a result, Absa can send payouts beyond bank accounts to mobile wallets and card rails.
These payouts come with 24/7 liquidity and compliance support, while Absa clients also gain FX services, scalable liquidity and clearing across multiple payment rails.

“Deepening our strategic collaboration with Thunes is a natural evolution of our commitment to delivering intuitive, world-class financial services,”
said Richard Southey, Managing Executive of Payments as a Service at Absa CIB.

“By extending our collaboration and taking on a strategic Multicurrency Clearing role supporting Absa Group, we are providing the digital infrastructure and liquidity needed to connect African businesses and consumers to global payment ecosystems seamlessly,”
said Daniel Parreira, Senior Vice President for Africa at Thunes.
Executives from both companies held a signing ceremony for the deal during Sibos 2026 in Miami.
